Most people hear “AI agent” and picture yet another app to download. Meta’s Muse is the rare exception: in the United States and Canada, you can already use the agent from inside WhatsApp — the chat app most of us open dozens of times a day — without installing anything new. The catch is availability. Muse is still tightly region-locked, and half the people who think they have it are actually looking at Meta AI, which is a different product entirely. This guide sorts that out: where Muse actually lives, who can use the WhatsApp version today, what it can do from inside a chat, and five starter tasks that show what an agent is for.
Desk-researched from Meta’s stated availability and third-party reporting dated 8–11 October 2026. I have not hands-on tested the WhatsApp flow — there is no legitimate way to do that outside the US and Canada today — so treat the step-by-step below as a reported walkthrough, not a personal test.
Where can you actually find Muse?
Muse does not live in one place. Meta has spread the agent across several surfaces, and the right one depends on the job. Here is the map as of October 2026:
| Surface | Availability (Oct 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Muse app (iOS / Android) | US & Canada, adults only | The full experience: connected accounts, deep multi-step tasks |
| muse.ai (web) | US & Canada | Desktop work without installing anything |
| Mac app | US & Canada | Desktop tasks and file organisation |
| iPad app (launched 7 Oct) | US & Canada | Larger-screen work sessions |
| US & Canada (“supported markets”) | Quick tasks inside the chats you already have | |
| Instagram share sheet | Icon appears in more regions, but access is blocked outside US/Canada | Surfacing Muse — not full access |
Muse launched on 8 September 2026 in the US and arrived in Canada on 18 September, per availability trackers (UseCarly, 30 Sep 2026). The Mac version followed about a week after the mobile debut, and the iPad app landed on 7 October with new work connectors — Canva, Dropbox, Figma, QuickBooks, GitHub, Zoom, Asana and Klaviyo, plus Notion, Granola and Meta ad accounts (Business Today, 8 Oct 2026). WhatsApp access in supported markets is listed by multiple trackers, including the IBTimes availability rundown (8 Oct 2026). If you are still deciding whether Muse is worth your time at all, our Muse early access guide covers what has actually shipped versus what is still just announced.
Muse vs Meta AI: the mix-up that trips everyone up
This is the single most common source of confusion, and it has a clean answer. Meta AI and Meta Muse are two different products on two different rollouts — having one tells you nothing about the other (AI Agents Library, updated 11 Oct 2026):
| Meta AI | Muse | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An assistant that answers and creates | An agent that takes actions for you |
| Where you find it | Inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook — in many countries | Its own app, muse.ai, Mac and WhatsApp — US & Canada only |
| Acts on your behalf? | No — it chats | Yes — with your approval |
The gap exists for a reason. An assistant that writes you a paragraph can ship almost anywhere; an agent that logs into accounts, fills in forms and spends money runs into consumer-protection, data and liability rules that differ by country (AI Agents Library). So when your friend in Mumbai says “Muse is already in my WhatsApp,” they are almost certainly talking to Meta AI.
Who can use Muse on WhatsApp right now?
As of 11 October 2026, the answer is short: adults in the United States and Canada (Analytics Insight, 28 Sep 2026; IBTimes, 8 Oct 2026). Meta says more countries are coming but has named none and given no dates (UseCarly).
In India, something confusing is happening: the Muse icon has started appearing inside Instagram — several users report seeing it when they share a Reel or post. But tapping it just leads to a prompt to get the Muse app, and then to the message “Muse AI is not available in your country” (Deccan Herald, 9 Oct 2026; IBTimes, 8 Oct 2026). The same story holds in the UK and Australia: no release date announced (UseCarly).
A word on VPNs: several sites publish “how to use Muse in India” guides built on VPN workarounds. UseCarly notes the app is region-locked in both app stores and calls this unreliable and outside Meta’s terms; Analytics Insight warns that a Meta account used this way risks suspension. Our advice matches the trackers’: wait for the official rollout. There is no version of this that ends with legitimate Muse access outside the US and Canada today.
How to start: your first five minutes with Muse on WhatsApp
Assuming you are in a supported market, the flow — as reported, not hands-on tested — looks like this:
- Confirm your eligibility. US or Canada, 18 or older. If you are anywhere else, you will hit the not-available wall, and no trick reliably gets around it.
- Open WhatsApp and find Muse where your other chats live. Meta lists WhatsApp as an access surface in supported markets (IBTimes) — you chat with the agent the same way you would message a contact.
- Lead with a task, not a question. Muse is an agent, not a chatbot. “Find me…” and “Track…” beat “What is…” — give it a job with a clear finish line.
- Expect it to ask before it acts. Meta says Muse checks with you before sensitive actions like sending an email or making a purchase, and it shows you a complete audit trail of everything it has done and plans to do (Deccan Herald, 9 Oct 2026).
- Read the audit trail after your first task. That is how you learn what the agent actually touched — and it is the fastest way to calibrate how much you trust it with step two.
Five first tasks worth trying
Each of these maps to a capability Meta attributes to Muse (Deccan Herald, 9 Oct 2026). Copy, fill in the brackets, and send:
- Price watch: “Track the price of [headphones model] and tell me when it drops below $[X].” — Muse is reported to monitor gadget and apparel prices and notify you when a deal appears.
- Reservation: “Find me a dinner reservation for two this Friday near [area] — and confirm with me before you book anything.” — Restaurant bookings are a stated capability; the confirmation clause keeps the approval in your hands.
- Subscription audit: “Go through my recent statements and list the subscriptions I’m not using.” — Meta says Muse can identify forgotten subscriptions and cut them.
- Personal dashboard: “Build me a weekly meal-planner dashboard.” — Muse is said to generate custom tools — dashboards, trackers, meal planners, workout logs — in minutes.
- Email triage: “Summarise my unread email and draft replies for my approval — do not send anything.” — Email help plus the approval rule in one line; a good first trust test.
Want stronger prompts once the basics click? Our 12 copy-paste Muse prompts are written for the full app, but the Goal–Context–Artifact–Guardrails–Approval formula in that piece works just as well inside a chat thread.
Chat vs app: which surface for which job?
The agent underneath is the same — powered by Muse Spark models (Deccan Herald) — so a task can start in chat and continue elsewhere with the same memory. As a rule of thumb:
Stay in WhatsApp when the task is quick and conversational: a price check, a reservation request, an approval while you are out, a follow-up question in an existing thread. The chat surface is at its best for one-off jobs you would otherwise do by texting a very capable assistant.
Open the full app when the job needs connected accounts, long multi-step projects, or careful review of audit trails. Connecting services — the 15 connectors including Asana, Notion, QuickBooks and Shopify, plus Facebook Pages, Instagram and Meta ad accounts — is app and web territory, as we covered in our Muse on iPad work-tools explainer.
The approval rules: what Muse always asks first
Delegation only works if the boundaries are clear. Here is what Meta says the boundaries are (Deccan Herald, 9 Oct 2026):
- Sensitive actions need your OK. Sending an email, making a purchase — Muse checks with you first, every time.
- Credentials go into secure storage. Anything you share, Muse can use without seeing; it cannot see passwords you type into a browser yourself.
- It runs in its own cloud VM. Meta describes “Muse Secure VM,” a dedicated virtual machine, with a separate Sentinel agent on the same machine watching that nothing leaks onto the internet. That is Meta’s claim, not an independent audit.
- You get an audit trail. Everything Muse did, and everything it plans to do, is shown to you for review.
One honest counterweight: October 2026 reporting by TIME and Wired found that Muse builds hourly “Relationships” dossiers — including on people who never signed up. We dug into exactly what is reported, what Meta says, and what is still unverified in our Muse privacy explainer. Practical takeaway: let it read your calendar before you let it near your address book.
Limits to know on day one
- Pricing: free for most of what people need, per Meta, with paid Power ($20/month) and Maximum ($100/month) tiers for heavier agent use (Deccan Herald; KuCoin’s Muse FAQ citing Meta).
- Scale, for context: Sensor Tower estimates put Muse past 6.6 million installs across iOS and Android in its first month (reported ~10 Oct 2026). That tells you the launch is real — not that it is available to you.
- Announced, not shipped: the standalone Muse Charm device and the smart-glasses integration are announced for “the coming months” (Business Today, 8 Oct 2026). Do not buy hardware expecting them today.
FAQ
Is Muse on WhatsApp the same as Meta AI?
No. Meta AI is the chat assistant already inside WhatsApp in many countries. Muse is the newer agent that takes actions on your behalf, and it is only available in the US and Canada (AI Agents Library, 11 Oct 2026).
Why do I see the Muse icon but can’t use it?
The Instagram share sheet surfaces the Muse icon in more regions, but the service itself is region-locked. Outside the US and Canada, tapping it leads to a “not available in your country” message (Deccan Herald; IBTimes, Oct 2026).
Can I use a VPN to access Muse?
Not reliably — and it may violate Meta’s terms and put your account at risk. The app is region-locked in both app stores (UseCarly; Analytics Insight).
Does Muse on WhatsApp cost money?
It is free for most uses, per Meta, with optional Power and Maximum paid tiers for heavier use (Deccan Herald, 9 Oct 2026).
Sources and methodology
Availability and launch dates: AI Agents Library — Meta Muse availability (updated 11 Oct 2026); UseCarly — Where is Meta Muse available? (30 Sep 2026); IBTimes — Meta Muse not available in India (8 Oct 2026). Capabilities and privacy claims: Deccan Herald — What is Meta’s Muse AI agent (9 Oct 2026), reporting Meta’s statements. India rollout status: Analytics Insight (28 Sep 2026). iPad launch and connectors: Business Today (8 Oct 2026).
Method: claims rest on Meta’s stated availability and third-party reporting dated 28 Sep–11 Oct 2026; no figures are invented and unconfirmed items are labelled. WhatsApp flows are desk-researched, not hands-on tested, because no legitimate test path exists outside the US and Canada. Availability re-verified 12 October 2026.
