Google is replacing Gemini Gems with Skills, and the switch starts in earnest this week. If you built Gems for writing, teaching, research or brand work, you do not need to panic — but you do need a plan. This guide shows what Skills change, the exact migration dates, and how to rebuild your best Gems as stackable Skills you can invoke with a slash.
What Are Gemini Skills, and Why Are They Replacing Gems?
Google announced Skills on 30 September 2026 as reusable custom instructions that live directly inside Gemini chat. Instead of opening a separate Gems manager, you type a forward slash and the skill name in the prompt bar to apply it mid-conversation. Google says Gemini can also detect when a saved Skill fits your prompt and apply it automatically, and — the change that matters most — you can stack multiple Skills in one session, for example a writing-style Skill together with brand guidelines. Gems never supported that combination; each Gem ran alone. Skills also accept reference files (plain text, PDFs and images today, with Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook notebooks promised in the coming weeks) and use an open SKILL.md format, according to Google’s announcement and follow-on coverage.
“Once you create a skill, you can easily use it again just by typing a forward slash ‘/’ and the skill’s name directly in the prompt bar.”
— Google, “Automate repetitive tasks with Skills”, 30 September 2026
When Does the Gems-to-Skills Migration Happen?
The rollout is staged by account type, which is why some readers already see Skills and others do not. Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education rollout begins 5 October 2026, the Gemini app rollout begins 13 October 2026, and personal-account Gems are set to move into Settings and then convert automatically from 17 November 2026, with Workspace business/enterprise following in March 2027 and education in June 2027. Google says leftover Gems will be automatically migrated as draft Skills when Gems go away for each group. Treat vendor dates as rolling by account, not a single global switch.
| Date | What changes | Who is affected |
|---|---|---|
| 30 Sep 2026 | Skills announced and rolling out in Gemini chat globally; already available in Gemini Spark | Personal accounts first |
| 5 Oct 2026 | Workspace rollout begins | Business, enterprise, nonprofit, education |
| 13 Oct 2026 | Gemini app rollout begins | Gemini app users |
| 17 Nov 2026 | Personal Gems move/convert automatically; Opal also turns down | Personal accounts |
| Mar 2027 | Gems deprecated for Workspace business/enterprise/nonprofit | Workspace (non-education) |
| Jun 2027 | Gems deprecated for education | Workspace education |
How Do You Create Your First Gemini Skill?
Start small: rebuild one Gem you actually use weekly, not your whole library. Desk-validated from Google’s official post and help-centre behaviour (not hands-on tested on a migrated account — Skills availability varies by account this week), the workflow is:
- Open Gemini and find Skills / Create skill (in Gemini Spark today, rolling into main chat). If you do not see it yet, note your rollout date from the table above and prepare your instructions as text in the meantime.
- Name the Skill for the job, not the persona — e.g. “Meeting Prep” beats “Helpful Assistant”. You will type this name after a slash, so keep it short.
- Write the instruction block: role, inputs you will provide, exact output format, and 2-3 hard rules (tone, length, what to never do). Save one instruction set per job.
- Attach a reference file if the job needs it (a style guide PDF, a price list, a marking rubric image). Files are part of the Skill, so keep them current.
- Test in a fresh chat: type “/” plus the Skill name, give it a real task, and check the output against your rules. Fix the Skill, not just the chat.
- Turn on Keep Activity if you want Gemini to remember and suggest Skills automatically; with it off, Skills memory between sessions is limited.
How Do You Stack Skills for Real Work?
Stacking is the reason to migrate early instead of waiting for the automatic conversion. A single Gem forced you to jam every rule into one instruction set. Skills let you keep small, clean blocks and combine them per task.
| Stack | Use it for | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Writing Voice + Brand Guard | On-brand drafts in your tone | Voice controls how it sounds; Brand Guard controls claims, terms and banned phrases separately |
| Research Lenses + Presentation Builder | Briefing to slides | Lenses force 3-5 distinct viewpoints; the builder turns the chosen view into outline, talking points and Q&A prep |
| Lab Rules + Writing Voice | Student or technical reports | Rules stay fixed for safety/format while voice adapts to the audience |
Try this: invoke “/Meeting Prep /Writing Voice” (names will match your own Skills), paste the agenda, and ask for a one-page brief. What happens: Gemini applies the prep structure first, then the voice rules to the wording. Good to know: a Skill built in the Gemini app does not automatically appear in Workspace — if you need it in both places, build it twice.
How Do You Migrate Your Gems Without Losing Work?
Do not rely solely on automatic migration. It converts what remains at the deadline, but it will not rescue Opal workflows or Labs-made Gems, and drafts still need checking. Use this 7-day audit:
- Day 1: List every Gem and mark it Keep, Merge or Retire. Retire anything unused for 60 days.
- Day 2: Export or copy the full instructions of each Keep Gem into a document (this is your backup if a draft conversion mangles formatting).
- Day 3: Split each Keep Gem into single-job Skills. If one Gem contains voice + format + policy, that becomes three stackable Skills.
- Day 4: Recreate your single most-used Gem as a Skill and run both side by side on the same task. Compare outputs.
- Day 5: Add reference files to the new Skills and re-test.
- Day 6: Share the plan with your team; note that sharing Skills with others is still rolling out, so keep the backup document as the team source of truth for now.
- Day 7: Delete nothing yet. Keep Gems running until your account’s conversion date, then publish the auto-migrated drafts only after a test run.
Five Starter Skills You Can Copy Today
Use these as SKILL.md-style instruction blocks. Replace the brackets with your own rules.
- Presentation Builder — “You prepare presentations. Given a topic and audience, output: a 6-slide outline, speaker notes per slide, and 5 likely questions with short answers. Keep slides to one claim each.”
- Writing Voice — “Match this writing sample: [paste 200 words of your writing]. Keep sentence length varied, avoid hype words, and never use exclamation marks unless I ask.”
- Multi-Perspective — “For any decision topic, give 3 to 5 distinct viewpoints, each with its strongest argument, its biggest risk, and what evidence would change it. End with no recommendation unless I ask.”
- Brand Guard — “Apply these brand rules: [terms, banned phrases, claim limits, disclosure lines]. If a draft breaks a rule, flag it and offer a compliant rewrite instead of silently fixing it.”
- Meeting Prep — “Given an agenda and attendee list, output: decisions needed, background in 5 bullets, risks, and a proposed 30-minute running order.”
What Traps Should You Avoid?
Three traps are catching early users. First, the sync trap: app Skills and Workspace Skills do not sync, so a Skill you build at home will not be waiting at work. Second, the one-at-a-time trap in some surfaces: if only one Skill can be switched on, disable the active one before enabling another, or use the slash invocation inside chat where stacking is supported. Third, the deadline trap: personal accounts convert in November 2026, but Workspace education runs to June 2027 — do not delete Gems early just because a colleague’s account already migrated.
Our contribution here is the audit-and-split method above: instead of one-to-one Gem copies, we broke legacy Gems into single-job, stackable Skills and tested the logic against Google’s published stacking example (writing style plus brand guidelines). It is desk-validated from primary documentation, not hands-on tested on a fully migrated Workspace tenant, so verify slash behaviour on your own account before deleting any Gem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my Gems be deleted if I do nothing?
No. Google says remaining Gems will be automatically migrated into Skills (as drafts) when Gems go away for your account type — November 2026 for personal accounts, later for Workspace. Back up the instructions anyway, because Opal and Labs-made Gems are not covered the same way.
Can I use more than one Skill at once?
Yes. That is the headline change from Gems. You can stack multiple Skills in one chat — for example writing style plus brand guidelines — and Gemini can also auto-apply a Skill it detects as relevant.
Do Skills work on free accounts?
Google’s rollout covers personal Google Accounts for users aged 18 and over, with work and school expansion following the staged timeline. Availability this week varies by account, so check for the Skills entry in your own Gemini before planning a team rollout.
What happens to shared Gems and Drive files?
Google says sharing Skills with others, plus attaching Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook notebooks, is arriving in the coming weeks. Until it lands on your account, treat Skills as personal and keep a shared backup document.
Sources and Methodology
This guide rests on Google’s primary announcement (“Automate repetitive tasks with Skills”, blog.google, 30 September 2026), the Gemini Apps help-centre transition notes summarised in trade coverage, and the staged rollout dates reported from Google’s Workspace Updates. Method: claims were checked against the official Google post first, then cross-checked with independent coverage before writing; five starter Skills and the 7-day audit were built from Google’s documented behaviours (slash invocation, stacking, reference files, automatic migration). Verification date: 5 October 2026. Where behaviour is still rolling out (sharing, Drive attachments, app-to-Workspace sync), we label it as forthcoming rather than live for every account. Desk-validated, not hands-on tested on a migrated tenant.
