If you have asked ChatGPT to split a bill, compare two budgets or explain how something works and then had to re-prompt every time one number changed, Intelligent UI is OpenAI’s attempt to remove that loop. This guide explains what the new GPT-6 feature does, who can use it, how to trigger it deliberately and how to check an interactive answer before you rely on it.
What is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?
Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 compose an answer from text, visuals and working controls instead of returning text alone. According to OpenAI’s Help Center, responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences used directly in the conversation (OpenAI Help Center, accessed 9 October 2026: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001598-intelligent-ui-in-chatgpt ).
The model is meant to choose the format that fits the question. OpenAI’s examples reported at launch include a comparison shown side by side, an explanation turned into an interactive diagram, a recipe timeline, a road-trip map, and small tools such as a savings calculator, a bill splitter or a game (MacRumors, 7 October 2026: https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/07/chatgpt-intelligent-ui/ ). When plain text is the most useful response, ChatGPT can still answer in plain text. In other words, Intelligent UI is not a separate app and it is not a guarantee that every answer becomes a dashboard. It is a new output layer inside the Chat tab.
This matters because changing an input should now update the answer in place. TechRepublic’s launch coverage gives the practical example readers will recognise first: adjust a savings contribution, explore part of a diagram or change a stop on a trip map without asking for a whole new response (TechRepublic, 8 October 2026: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-gpt-6-intelligent-ui-charts-forms/ ).
Who gets GPT-6 Intelligent UI and when?
Paid ChatGPT plans received GPT-6 with Intelligent UI first, and the free tiers followed a day later. OpenAI says GPT-6 in ChatGPT is based on GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, and that both Sol and Luna support Intelligent UI. The Pro reasoning option uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI (OpenAI Help Center, accessed 9 October 2026).
| Plan group | GPT-6 model in Chat | Intelligent UI | Rollout reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | Yes, in Chat | Began 7 October 2026 |
| Free and Go | GPT-6 Luna | Yes, in Chat | Followed from 8 October 2026 |
| Pro reasoning option | GPT-6 Astra | No | Use a non-Pro reasoning setting for Intelligent UI |
The feature lives in Chat, not everywhere in ChatGPT. OpenAI says Intelligent UI is available in the Chat tab, not the Work tab, and it is not available in Voice. It works from Instant through Extra High reasoning levels. If you do not see interactive answers yet, the likely causes are a staged rollout, an older app version, the Work tab, Voice, or the Pro reasoning option, rather than a missing prompt trick.
There is no separate Intelligent UI quota in the Help Center summary, but normal plan and model limits still apply. Treat availability as account-specific until you see GPT-6 in your own Chat tab.
How do you use Intelligent UI step by step?
You do not need a special mode, but asking for a tool explicitly makes the result far more predictable. Follow this sequence the first time you try it:
- Open the Chat tab. Do not start in the Work tab, and do not use Voice for this test. If your account shows a model picker, choose GPT-6 (Sol on paid plans, Luna on Free and Go).
- Name the job, not just the topic. Instead of “explain compound interest”, ask “Build an interactive savings calculator that shows how a monthly deposit grows over 3 years, and let me change the deposit and the annual return.”
- Give the inputs and the output you want. List the numbers ChatGPT may use, the range a slider should cover and what the final figure should show, for example total deposits, estimated growth and final balance shown separately.
- Change one input only. Move a single slider or edit a single field and watch what updates. If three figures change when you only changed the deposit, the calculator is not safe to trust yet.
- Ask for the formula in plain text. Follow up with “Show the formula and one worked example under the calculator.” A tool that cannot explain its own maths is a presentation, not a calculator.
- Check the result against one hand calculation. Use round fictional numbers first, such as a 200 monthly deposit for 36 months, so total deposits must equal 7,200 before any growth is added. This catches the most common failure in seconds.
- Refine the interface, not the whole prompt. Ask for one change at a time, such as “add a fees field” or “show 1, 3 and 5 years side by side”, so you can see whether each change behaves as requested.
If ChatGPT answers in plain text when you wanted a tool, say so directly. A reliable follow-up is: “Turn that answer into an interactive tool I can adjust, and keep the explanation under it.” If you want the opposite, ask for “plain text only, no charts or tools”. OpenAI also says Custom Instructions can carry a standing preference, such as asking for tables when comparing options, although the exact layout can still vary.
Which 5 prompts are worth trying first?
Start with low-risk jobs where a wrong figure is easy to spot. These five copy-paste prompts are designed for a first session; replace the bracketed details with your own and keep the figures fictional until you have checked the behaviour.
Try this: “Build an interactive workshop cost calculator. Let me change the ticket price, the number of attendees and the room cost. Show total revenue, total costs and profit separately, and show the formula you used under the calculator.”
What happens: This tests sliders or fields, three linked outputs and whether changing attendees updates revenue without silently changing your room cost.
Try this: “Make a bill splitter for [5] people and a total bill of [180], with a tip percentage I can change. Show what each person pays and the full amount including tip.”
What happens: This is the fastest arithmetic check: the per-person share multiplied back by the number of people should match the total with tip.
Try this: “Explain how a bicycle gear system works with an interactive diagram. Let me select the front and rear gears and show how the gear ratio changes.”
What happens: This tests whether an explanation benefits from a diagram with selectable parts rather than a longer paragraph.
Try this: “Build a savings explorer. Let me change the monthly deposit, the annual return and the number of years. Show total deposits and estimated growth as separate bars so I can see how much is my money and how much is estimated growth.”
What happens: Separating deposits from estimated growth stops the most misleading presentation error in savings tools: presenting a projected balance as if it were all earnings.
Try this: “Plan a 2-day road trip from [start town] to [end town] and show the stops on a map. Let me remove one stop and show how the total driving time changes.”
What happens: This tests maps and list editing together, and whether removing a stop updates the route instead of only deleting a label.
Good to know: None of these prompts asks ChatGPT to make a financial, medical or business decision for you. They ask it to build a small tool whose behaviour you can inspect, which is the right order.
A 10-minute starter ladder you can verify yourself
The original contribution of this guide is a three-task ladder that checks behaviour, not appearance. We designed this ladder for this article and desk-validated the steps against OpenAI’s Help Center documentation; we have not hands-on tested Intelligent UI inside a GPT-6 account for this piece, because access is rolling out by account. Run it in your own account before you use any generated tool for a real figure, and keep your own result, not ours, as the verdict.
Task 1, the deposit check (about 3 minutes). Run the savings explorer prompt above with a monthly deposit of 200 for 3 years. Note the total-deposits figure. Change only the deposit to 300 and check that total deposits rises from 7,200 to 10,800 and that nothing else you did not touch changes without explanation.
Task 2, the removal check (about 3 minutes). Run the road-trip prompt with three stops. Remove the middle stop and check that both the stop list and the total driving time change. If the time stays identical, the map is decorative and the text underneath is doing all the work.
Task 3, the explanation check (about 4 minutes). Run the bicycle gear prompt, select two different gear combinations and ask “Explain in one sentence why the second combination is harder to pedal.” The diagram and the sentence should agree. If they disagree, trust neither until you have checked the gear-ratio formula separately.
How to read the result. Passing all three checks means Intelligent UI is behaving like a tool on your account for these job types. Failing any one check does not mean the feature is useless; it means that answer type needs a hand calculation beside it, which is exactly what the ladder is for.
When does interactive help, and when is plain text faster?
Interactive answers earn their screen space only when you need to change something and immediately see the effect. Use this verdict table before you ask for a tool.
| Your job | Ask for interactive | Ask for plain text | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compare budgets or prices with changing numbers | Yes | No | Changing one input and seeing linked totals update is the core benefit |
| Learn how a system works | Yes, a diagram | Sometimes | Selectable parts beat a long description, but a definition alone does not need a tool |
| Plan a route or a sequence | Yes, a map or checklist | No | Removing or reordering steps should visibly change the plan |
| Get a definition or a quick fact | No | Yes | A tool adds loading and layout without adding understanding |
| Draft an email or a paragraph | No | Yes | You need words you can edit, not controls |
| Make a decision with real money or health consequences | Only as a first draft | Also yes, for the reasoning | Verify every figure independently; an interactive total is not evidence |
The pattern is consistent: interactivity helps exploration and hurts retrieval. If your next action is “what happens if I change this?”, ask for a tool. If your next action is “copy that sentence”, ask for text.
How do you turn Intelligent UI down or off?
You can choose a simpler response style, but OpenAI does not promise a fully text-only ChatGPT. On the web, OpenAI says to select Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, then Simple. That setting reduces visual and interactive elements, although some may still appear. For a single conversation, a direct instruction such as “answer in plain text only” is the faster lever.
Preferences guide the response; they do not lock the layout. OpenAI notes that Custom Instructions can state how you would like ChatGPT to respond, for example keeping answers concise or using tables for comparisons, while the exact layout can vary. If a generated checklist matters to your workflow, note that OpenAI says some components, such as checklists, can retain their state when you refresh the same chat thread, but state is not retained across chat threads. Do not treat a checklist inside one thread as a saved project record.
What should you check before trusting an interactive answer?
Treat every generated calculator as unreviewed software until you have run one hand calculation. The interface appearing quickly is not the same as the figures being right. Verify totals, formulas and assumptions, especially for costs, savings projections and any figure you plan to send to another person.
Read the widely shared speed figure carefully. Reporting on the launch states that OpenAI reported GPT-6 Instant beginning answers to web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, and that this is a company-reported internal figure about time until a response begins, not a promise that a complete answer or a finished interactive tool arrives 44% faster (TechRepublic, 8 October 2026). Speed to first words is useful; it is not an accuracy measure.
If you need repeatable team workflows rather than one-off chat tools, compare this with a connected-workflow approach. Our guide to ChatGPT Space, Pages and team features explains the shared-workspace side of ChatGPT (https://openaimaster.ai/how-to-use-chatgpt-space-pages/ ), and our MCP explainer covers connecting AI to external tools through servers rather than generated in-chat interfaces (https://openaimaster.ai/mcp-explained-how-to-connect-ai-tools/ ). Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special prompt to get Intelligent UI?
No. OpenAI says GPT-6 chooses how to compose the answer and can use plain text when that fits better. Asking explicitly to “build an interactive calculator” or “turn this into a diagram I can adjust” makes a tool more likely, and asking for “plain text only” pushes the other way.
Why do I not see Intelligent UI in my account yet?
Check that you are in the Chat tab rather than the Work tab, that you are not using Voice, that your app is updated and that you are not on the Pro reasoning option, which uses GPT-6 Astra without Intelligent UI. Rollout also began on 7 October 2026 for paid plans and 8 October for Free and Go, so account timing can still be the explanation.
What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna for this feature?
OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol in Chat, while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna, and both support Intelligent UI. The Help Center summary does not promise identical interfaces on both models, so judge the tool you actually receive, not the launch screenshots.
Can I turn Intelligent UI completely off?
You can reduce it. On the web, choose Personalization, then Layout and Visuals, then Simple. OpenAI says this reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear, so it is a reduction setting rather than a guaranteed text-only switch.
Should I use an Intelligent UI calculator for a real budget?
Only as a first draft. Run the deposit check in this guide with round numbers, ask for the formula, and confirm one worked example by hand before entering real figures. An interactive total is a calculation you still have to verify, not a verified result.
